McCarthy, Miranda and Lieberman: "One of These Things Is Not Like The Other..."

Yeah, it's a school night. I know, I should be going to bed, but I'm all worked up over McCarthy's, I mean Lieberman's latest brain fart. Y'know, somebody isn't taking his Alzheimer's meds...he's thinking we're still in the 50's, apparently. Lieberman said today that he is submitting legislation that will strip you of your American citizenship based on what groups you associate with, online or otherwise. Kinda reminds me of how my mom would say, "Be careful who your friends are. Your friends are a reflection of you, and people will think you are like them, whether you are or not."

Coming from my mom, when I was 10, that was pretty good advice. And there were even times when she didn't approve of the group I was hanging with, and she forbid me to see them anymore (yeah, we all know how well that works, huh?) But she didn't tell me that if she thought my friends were dangerous, she'd disown me, for Pete's sake...And remember the "Bad Boy" you thought was soooo cool? (C'mon, Girls, we all had one! That, and a gay guy we fell in love with...) Did you want to ride on his motorcycle? (No, no, the bad boy's...the gay boy had a scooter.) Yeah, and maybe you actually did. But you didn't get kicked out of the house for it, right?

So, not only is this an overreaction by an old, scared white guy, but it's also a violation of the due process rights we have as Americans. Funny that now, nearly a decade after they started illegally listening to our phone calls & emails, looking at our internet searches, checking our video rentals and library checkouts, now Lieberman decides he'll see who we're hanging out with, and punish us for it: by illegally stripping us of our citizenship. Tweenie was listening to the story, as she texted/facebooked/IM her friends - a much better multitasker than I - and she says, "God, Mom, what's happening in our country. That's so illegal. It's like they're ignoring that we have a constitution!" Yes, my darling Girl, and it scares the hell outta me. This, combined with the idea that Miranda rights are, well, no big deal, is freaking me out:

"But still..." Now, I know this may make me sound like a real Pollyanna, but, damn it, can somebody remind these guys that the United States is supposed to be the good guys? We're supposed to live by the rule of law, and only by the rule of law. But then came the Shrub and Darth Cheney, and they suspended the Bill of Rights and appointed judges that give corporations the rights of citizens in our electoral process. "But still..."??? My God.

I am flabbergasted. A fellow tweeter, AintYoMamasBlog, said to me about the GOP the other day:
Whenever I say what will they do or say next, I'm still always shocked. Wow.
Yep. That pretty much sums it up. Like I said, it's a school night, but I just had to vent. I worry what'll happen if the GOP gets back in control. Will I be stripped of my citizenship for having Muslim friends? Will I stumble onto the wrong website and find out in the mail two weeks later that my citizenship's been revoked? Will Tweenie and Little Man grow up in a country where they don't have the same expectations of rights and protections? And, for that matter, since when did my associations with others become the business of government? Probably about the same time that the Dems became the party of fiscal responsibility and the Rethugs started invading our bedrooms and homes with their ever-growing government.

G'nite, All. This definitely wasn't my best work - a sleepy effort at most. But I hope it brought this ridiculousness to your attention. See you around the intertubes. Be sure to leave me your thoughts on all this nonsense...I can't be the only one that's thinking this is insane!
